A Distinctively Different California Wine Club

We are Miles Grant and Tony Beck (T.B.), principals of a unique California wine club that only specializes in secret Napa Valley wines and Sonoma County wines.

Thirty years ago, we randomly sat next to each other on the first day of law school and soon found we had similar interests, including food, which formed the basis of a friendship.

We didn’t dream that one day we would form an innovative, online California wine club – one that uncovered secrets of the best Napa Valley wines and Sonoma County wines.

From Burgers to Cabernet
As poor, first-year law students, we talked about fine dining more often than we could actually partake, but we were authorities on the local pizza and burger joints.

After graduation, we practiced law, Miles in San Diego and T.B. in Los Angeles. We could afford to eat at better places, and wine seemed to naturally accompany better cuisine.

In the Eighties, our eyes were opened to great wines as we traveled through America’s premier location for great grapes — the Napa Valley. Initially, the obvious choices were Napa Valley Chardonnays and Napa Valley Cabernets. As we took more Napa Valley and Sonoma County trips, we tried to understand as many varietals as possible.

We attended fund-raising wine auctions and got to know Napa Valley and Sonoma County winery owners, winemakers and vineyard managers. We started learning the intricacies of producing wine, from planting the vineyards to uncorking the finished product.

The seeds for an innovative California wine club were planted.

Serious Wine Collectors

As decades passed, our knowledge grew, and so did our passion and search for the best wines and best food pairings. We talked with distributors, retailers and restaurant owners. All fueled our interest in viticulture.

We became serious about collecting fine wines. Whenever we got together, we would taste and review the latest purchases, or maybe drink a treasure that had been set aside for years. Naturally, our focus was typically on Napa Valley wines or Sonoma County wines.

We developed relationships with the people in the industry and investigated California wine clubs. Our friends would invite us to taste wines before release — sometimes during fermentation, sometimes while still in the barrel, and sometimes right after the wines were bottled.

We also had the chance to meet Napa Valley Winery and Sonoma County Winery owners and taste new wines from up-and-coming winemakers. Little by little, we began to understand the business of winemaking and the personalities that influenced every bottle of wine we tasted.

A Need to Share Our Fine Wine Knowledge

It became our credo to share fine wine discoveries with friends. Some would ask which wine went best with a certain food. Others wanted recommendations for wineries to visit. We never hesitated recommending newly discovered Napa Valley wines or the best Sonoma County wines.

It was a natural step to create an online service that no other Napa Valley wine club or even another California wine club seemed to be providing. Secret Napa Wines was born.

Why Secret Napa Wines, when we also recommend Sonoma County wines? We just thought it was a catchy name.

So that’s who we are. We’ve turned 30 years of dinners, trips through Napa and Sonoma Counties, and a growing passion for wine into Secret Napa Wines. And we want to share what we’ve learned.
